Which Appointments Work Well Through Telehealth?

At OccuMed Primary Care, we know that life doesn’t stop when you aren’t feeling your best. Between work commitments, family schedules, and daily errands, finding time to visit the doctor can be a challenge. That’s why we offer telehealth services to bring quality, compassionate healthcare directly to you, wherever you are. But if you’ve never had a virtual appointment, you might be wondering how it works and if it’s the right choice for your needs.

What Is Telehealth?

Telehealth, also called telemedicine, is a method of delivering healthcare remotely. Instead of driving to a clinic and sitting in a waiting room, you meet with your provider through a secure video call on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. This allows our team to assess your condition, offer medical advice, and help you manage your health without an in-person visit.

At OccuMed Primary Care, we use Doximity Dialer Video for these appointments. This is a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform that requires no downloads or complex software; it operates via a simple link sent to your phone.

What Visits Are Best for Telehealth?

While virtual visits are incredibly convenient, they are best suited for certain types of non-urgent care. Telehealth can be an excellent option for:

  • Minor illnesses: Cold and flu symptoms, allergies, or sinus infections.
  • Skin conditions: Rashes, insect bites, or other skin irritations that can be visually examined over video.
  • Medication management: Discussing prescription refills or adjustments for ongoing conditions.
  • Chronic disease follow-ups: Checking in on diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma management.
  • Reviewing results: Discussing lab work or imaging results with your provider.
  • Mental health: Consultations for anxiety, depression, or stress management.

A telehealth appointment allows you to get these kinds of health updates more easily and efficiently.

When Is an In-Person Visit Necessary?

Virtual care does have its limits. There are times when a physical examination is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and safe treatment. You should schedule an in-person appointment at our clinic for:

  • Physical exams: Annual physicals, sports physicals, or situations that require listening to the heart and lungs directly.
  • Acute injuries: Suspected broken bones, cuts requiring stitches, or sprains.
  • Testing: Lab draws, X-rays, or COVID-19 testing (though we can discuss symptoms virtually first).

In the event that you experience severe symptoms like chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe abdominal pain, you should seek immediate in-person emergency care.

How Should You Prepare for a Virtual Appointment?

To get the most out of your telehealth visit with OccuMed Primary Care, a little preparation can go a long way. Consider these tips:

  • Find a quiet spot: Choose a well-lit, private area where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Check your tech: Ensure your device is charged and has a strong internet connection.
  • Gather your info: Have a list of your current medications, any recent vitals (like temperature or blood pressure readings), and questions you want to ask.
  • Be ready to click: We will send you a text message with a secure link when it’s time for your appointment.

These will help ensure a smooth and productive experience during your virtual appointment.

How Does Follow-Up Work for Telehealth?

Just like a traditional visit, your care continues after the video call ends. If you are prescribed medication, it can be sent electronically to your pharmacy of choice. Should you need lab work or imaging, we will order those tests, and you can come into the office or go to a lab facility to have them done. And, if your condition doesn’t improve or requires a closer look, we will help you schedule an in-person follow-up at our Whiting location.
